The values given by a volt meter are in OHMS. Disconnect the wires from the positive and negative terminals on the coil. These terminals are connected to the primary circuit. The primary circuit is connected to the battery and creates a charge. Disconnect the spark plug lead from the coil tower. The coil tower is connected to the secondary circuit. The secondary circuit sends the electrical charge from the coil, to the distributor where the voltage is then sent on to the spark plugs to fire the engine.
Do not test the coil with any of these wires connected to the coil. Turn on the volt meter. You are testing resistance, not amps or current. If your meter has one, look at the screen. If an upside down horseshoe appears, the meter is ready to read OHMS -- resistance. For an outboard motor, turn the meter dial to Other options include 2, 20, and greater. These values are too high. Test the primary circuit. Place one probe from the amp meter on the positive terminal and the other probe on the other terminal.
It is irrelevant which probe touches which terminal because you are testing a circuit. The values of an outboard motor must fall between. If your OHMS do not fall within that range, your coil is bad. Model and Serial number of engine would be helpful as well. Comment Post Cancel. Based on what I see I would not suspect the pulser coil as causing a problem. It is not voltage output critical. It is only being used as a reference point as to when a transistor should stop current flowing to an ignition coil.

I took 2 pins and slid them along side the wire into the connector. The motor ran perfectly. Went back the next day and tried the same test and it ran rough. Thinking the issue was in the connector I made a harness, separated the connector and monitored the v with the DVA. Still ran rough.
The problem points to something in the pulser coil. Maybe something temp sensitive in the pulser coil, possible intermittent connector or something. Absolutely all the testing I've done is well within spec.
The pulser coil is the only part that I've had a ray of hope. Don't get tunnel visioned on a part you think "must" be faulty, it tests OK, look elsewhere, or, just to ease your mind, throw some money at a new coil, then you will have a spare for later.Just got back from a 7 day tour of southern Iceland organized by NordicVisitor.
I was impressed that I went into this trip with no real knowledge of what I was getting myself, my wife and three teenage children into. The trip went on without a single hitch. The car rental, hotel reservations and activities were all perfect and we had a blast. Thank you and I would recommend this company to anyone. The only hitch was cost which was difficult to get a handle on.
In particular, the activities were costly. BUT, well worth every penny. We joined the Nordic Visitor tour party on the 25rd July following two days in Reykjavik on our own. Nordic Visitor arranged for a taxi (with welcome pack and documents) to pick us up from the airport on Thursday and on to our pre tour accommodation, we then made our way to the tour hotel on the Saturday evening.
Our guide Porsteinn (Steine) met us at the welcome meeting and told us our agenda. Sunday morning the tour set off at 9am the starting time for everyday. The tour went round the whole island (around 2000km covered) visiting all the major sites that can be reached from the N1 ring road.
We were of the 'comfort' level of accommodation and all the hotels and guesthouses were of at least 3 star quality with large clean rooms and en-suite facilities. Some had fabulous views as well. The guide constantly fed us information of the sites we visited in an informal but informative way with a few Icelandic folk stories and jokes thrown in.
The transport was a mini bus taking 16 of us comfortably from site to site with various comfort stops on the way. There is a little walking to be done for example up to Dettifoss that cannot be avoided but all the walks were really strolls and nothing over taxing. The evening meals that were provided as part of the package were either in the accommodation or at local restaurants and were of a very high quality.
There are optional extra's such as Whale Watching and the Thermal baths which although we pre booked could be booked on the tour.
